History

Spring Valley is one of Walmart's private-label brands, alongside names like Equate and Great Value, covering multivitamins, fish oil, probiotics, prenatal formulas, and other supplement categories sold exclusively through Walmart stores and Walmart.com. Because it is a store brand, Walmart controls the formulation and marketing, but contracts the actual manufacturing out to third parties, International Vitamin Corporation (IVC) has been identified as a major contract manufacturer for Spring Valley products.

As the label owner, Walmart bears legal responsibility under FDA rules for ensuring Spring Valley products are not adulterated or mislabeled, even though it does not run the production lines itself. Claims circulating on social media that Spring Valley products are unsafe because some are made in China have been fact-checked as needing more context, some Spring Valley products are manufactured overseas and some domestically, which alone is not evidence of a safety problem, according to a 2020 USA Today fact-check.

Walmart has more recently signaled a shift toward carrying more heavily-verified third-party brands (such as Nutrafol and Ritual) alongside its own private labels, describing a vetting process that includes reviewing clinical studies and ingredients, an implicit acknowledgment that its house brand does not carry the same level of independent verification as some name brands it stocks.

Why it is trusted

  • +Walmart's scale gives it leverage over contract manufacturers and legal exposure as the label owner, which creates some incentive for consistent quality control.
  • +Priced well below most name-brand competitors, which is a legitimate value proposition if formulation and dose match what you need.
  • +No brand-wide USP or NSF verification was found across the Spring Valley line, this is a private label built primarily on price, not on third-party-audited quality claims.
  • +Manufacturing is outsourced to contract manufacturers whose specific quality-control track record is not independently visible to consumers on a per-product basis.

Where we would be careful

  • No public USP or NSF certification found for the line; treat any "third-party tested" language on packaging as a brand claim rather than a checkable credential unless a specific certificate is provided.
  • Country of manufacture varies by product and has been a source of consumer confusion; check the label rather than assuming all Spring Valley products are made in the same place.
  • As a private label spanning dozens of supplement categories, quality and formulation choices can vary significantly product to product, a good Spring Valley product does not guarantee a good one in a different category.
