History
Nordic Naturals was founded in 1995 by Joar Opheim, who grew up in Norway and, after moving to California for an MBA, was frustrated by the low-quality fish oil available in the U.S. He began bringing suitcases of Norwegian fish oil to share with friends before turning it into a company. Opheim ran the company as CEO for nearly three decades and died in October 2024; John Stockman now serves as CEO.
The company has grown to several hundred employees and become one of the largest omega-3-focused supplement brands in the U.S., expanding from fish oil into probiotics, vitamin D, and other categories. It markets its fish oil as sustainably sourced and manufactured in a zero-waste, biofuel-powered facility, and its products are Friend of the Sea certified.
In February 2024, Nordic Naturals issued a voluntary recall of one lot of its Baby's Vitamin D3 Liquid after a manufacturing error produced an elevated, super-potent dose, which the FDA noted could cause symptoms of vitamin D toxicity in infants with prolonged use. The company said it notified distributors and retailers and arranged returns; the recall was later terminated by the FDA.
